October is bullying prevention month nationwide, and at BRCS our Wellness lessons during the entire month of October will be focused on Recognizing, Refusing, and Reporting bullying behavior. You can support these efforts by asking your child about the 3 "R"s and the strategies they are learning to help stop bullying! RECOGNIZE: During the first lesson, students will learn how to RECOGNIZE bullying and be able to explain how it is different from behavior that is simply rude or inconsiderate. This includes two main features: the child is being mean on purpose, and the behavior keeps happening after the child was asked to stop. It is also unfair to the victim and one-sided. We will also talk about different ways bullying can look on the playground, including physical aggression, verbal harassment/name calling, and nonverbal behaviors like intentionally leaving someone out of a game. REPORT: All students are expected to REPORT bullying behavior when it happens at our school. Students will identify their own trusted adults within the school building, and practice scripts for reporting bullying behavior to someone who can help (e.g. "I need to report bullying). Middle schoolers are also encouraged to access the SafeUT app if they want to report bullying but would prefer to do so anonymously. REFUSE: Refusing bullying requires assertiveness skills. Students will learn how to stand up for themselves in a bullying situation, as well as how to stand up for others as a bystander, by following these steps:
