Our school uses a program called Signs of Suicide to address youth suicide prevention with teachers, staff, and middle school students. 6th-8th graders received their second year of SOS training during the first week of November, and were reminded to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) if they notice warning signs of suicide in themselves or a friend. You also play an important role in the A-C-T process as a parent of one of our students. The infographic below outlines what you can do to help a child or teen who displays warning signs of suicide: This year, in addition to faculty and student trainings, BRCS also provided a live Zoom training for parents. The training outlines further strategies for building resilience and having difficult conversations with your child about mental health and suicide. If you weren't available during the live session, you can access the video via google drive! Click here to find the video.
As referenced at the end of the video, SOS has additional links and resources for families in their parent portal. You can access that webpage here. And, as always, please don't hesitate to reach out to the BRCS Wellness Director if you have any questions about our prevention programs, or concerns about a child in your life. This list of community resources is also updated regularly to provide a starting place for families seeking mental health support outside of the school setting. Remember- you can help your child ACT, and it just might save a life! -Ms. Harris
